Default Is the PS3 right for me?

Here's what I'm looking for:

- Blu-ray Playback (I should say 1080p Pixar movies, and for that Blu is the only way. As future proof as possible aka the whole BD-J stuff)

- DVD Playback with solid 1080p upscaling (I use my PS2 now and most movies I will still buy on DVD for compatibility's sake, sharing w/ friends, playing in different rooms, and in some cases $$)

- Games: Gran Turismo and Ratchet and Clank are my favorite games, plus I have a nice collection of PS2 and PS1 games, so thats a nobrainer.

On paper, the PS3 looks perfect for me, but I was hoping to get some opinions from those of you who have used it for a while. As will all purchases, there seems to be the little annoyances that you don't expect; noise, reliability, cancer causing radiation.. you know, the usual.

The only curve ball is Halo 3. I'd love to have Halo 3, but thats really the only 360 exclusive that I care about. Playing that on live with my friends and family would be SO fun! If Pixar/Disney was on HD DVD I'd probably be getting a 360 (as soon as they got cooler/quieter) because the Pixar stuff is really all I care about having in 1080p.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

Blu-Ray playback, check.
DVD upscale playback, check.
Games, will be coming... soo... half a check?
Old ps1 and 2 games, depends on if you get a ps3 with the emotion chip or not.
Halo 3, impossible on a Sony Playstation at this current time and most likely for the near future. So sorry, but on that one you're out of luck.

Thanks for the opinions!

Can anyone comment on the quality of the DVD to 1080p upscaling? As I mentioned, I do watch a ton of SD DVD's on my 42 inch 1080p LCD through my computer and they look pretty good. My 360 always seemed to look ok as well, but it was just SO loud.

technically, that can be true because there was only to be one format but Toshiba walked away.

McPasta: I can't speak from personal experience (don't own a PS3 but I own a 360 Elite), but I saw that Robert Heron (DL.tv) thought that the PS3 did a great job upscaling standard definition DVDs. He stated that a recent firmware update (think it was 1.8) added some better upscaling. He didn't directly compare it to the 360, but I think the implication was that it was better on the PS3. I'd provide a link, but it was from one of his weekly video podcasts. Check out dl.tv and see for yourself.

DrMaustus,

I checked out that site and I'm getting the episode now. Thanks!

I did remember reading a review that stated the PS3 was a solid SD DVD upconverter, but not quite as good as a few standalones (oppo comes to mind). But the standalones were $225 or so and if the PS3 can give me %80+ or so of that performance + blu-ray + games I'm happy.

McP: Yeah, I think the dedicated upscalers -- with their Faroudja chips, etc. -- probably do a better job, but then you can't play Blu-ray disks on those. It's a tough call. I guess you could base your decision on how many BR movies you're going to buy versus how many regular DVDs you own.
