Post NFL Sunday Ticket Not Coming to the PS3 This Year

Two years of availability end now.

In one of the unique and expensive arrangement available in entertainment, PS3 owners have had the option the past two seasons to subscribe and watch the near full slate of NFL games on their PS3. IGN is now reporting a confirmation from Sony of what has been expected for some time, there will be no NFL Sunday Ticket on the PS3 this year, which likely signals the end of the service on the platform.

Two years ago, the service, which came as an app for the PS3, involved two service options. Those already subscribing through DirecTV could enjoy the PS3 app as another way to watch games, and those without DirecTV service could subscribe for $340. Last year those same options remained, but the subscription fee drop to $300.

The introduction of the Xbox One back in May was noted for its emphasis on entertainment options apart from games, and the biggest example was probably the announcement of a five year partnership between Microsoft and the NFL. The endgame of the new service appears to offer the user live games with a fantasy football overlay. Thus far though, the service does not actually seem to mimic the Sunday NFL Ticket experience.

The NFL of course is known for favoring exclusive agreements, whether it be the Sunday NFL Ticket with DirecTV or the licensing involved with EA's 'Madden' football video games.

SUNDAY TICKET lost its appeal to me (and probably many others) once the NFL Network created their RED ZONE channel.

Still, if you were hoping for this, it sucks that they waited this late to announce it wouldn't be available this season.

I stopped watching ST as well as soon as I got the RZ channel in HD. It's a (fantasy) football lover's dream channel. I'd like ST just for the Redskin games but $300 for 8-9 untelevised games is way too much for me. Comcast offers RZ for only $5 a month more so it's a no brainer (plus, I don't have Directv anymore so I couldn't get ST even if I wanted to).

Red zone is glorious, the only way I watch full games now are Sunday/Monday night, playoffs/sb

There are some rumors going around about Google/YouTube getting the Sunday Ticket contract when it's up on Direct TV. That would be a game-changer.

I don't see how Google/YouTube could get it to pay for them, DirectTV is charging $225 for Sunday Ticket, $300 for Sunday Ticket "Max" with Red Zone, and Internet users aren't used to paying much, if anything, for content. DirecTV got me last year with free Sunday Ticket w/RZ for new subscribers. For the past several years I've only had local TV via antenna, I don't watch much TV except during football season. Denver Broncos are my favorite team, and I couldn't care less about my "home team", AZ Cardinals, so I figured I'd get to watch every Broncos game and skip the Cards, but I found I loved the Red Zone and watched that every Sunday. I'm locked into a DirecTV contract for another year, and when I saw they started automatically billing me in July for 5 monthly charges of $45 for Sunday Ticket with no Red Zone I called and complained. They offered me a free "upgrade" to Max w/RZ, and I told them I'd think about. I decided that's still a rip-off and called last week to cancel the package, and they knocked it down to 6 payments of $30 ($180) with the free upgrade to Max w/RZ, and I decided to go with it. Goggle or anyone else will never get enough folks to pay that much for Internet content, and the NFL isn't interested in getting less revenue.

The NFL got a bulk of their money from Direct TV paying $1 billion for the exclusive rights to the Sunday Ticket. If Google ponies up as much or even more, which they could easily, the NFL would go right along with it. Would they say no to 1.5 or 2 billion? I wouldn't think so. Maybe Google, through Android and YouTube, could make the Sunday Ticket more affordable and more accessible.

Was the service even any good on the PS3? I remember thinking about it, but I was worried that unlike cable tv, it'd just be some crappy quality stream.

.

Your results may very. All factors hinged on how good your Internet speeds were. It was fine with a minimum of 20 down. Worked best on iPad.
