Default Thinking about a PS3

Hi, I'm going to have a little bit of extra money coming in and have a few questions. I have a 1080i CRT with DVI input, will using a HDMI to DVI connector work with upscaling dvds and the different implementations of copy protection? I also have to use optical for audio, how does this effect PCM soundtracks? Does the PS3 have an option like the 360 w/ HD-DVD to convert the lossless audio to high bitrate DTS or something? I'm almost exclusively interested in foreign films, and remember reading about a disc where the original language was PCM only... I dont want to have to listen to a dub. I also dont want to spend an extra $100 on the 60gb model, so is it vital to have the console connected via eithernet all the time? I should be able to share the cable I use with my 360, but worse case can you download the firmware updates on your computer and burn to a disc? Thanks!

i'm not sure about the upscaling dvd part nor the audio part, but no, you don't need to have the ps3 connected via ethernet at all times. you should be able to download firmware updates and upload them via some other media:

Yes, I've used DVI to HDMI connectors, so I don't see why an HDM to DVI connector wouldnt work as well. The digital signal stays the same, however, since your lacking the audio portion that will be missing. However, if you're running your audio through optical it won't matter.

Optical with PCM goes to 2 channels only (Stereo).

Also, I believe the PS3 have issues with old HDTVs that displays resolution of 480P and 1080i (no 720P) only. So if you have a source of 720P (1080P?), it does not display it to 1080i but goes down to 480P instead. Again, I think that's the issue but you may want to check the AVS forum for more reliable information.

They fixed that problem with the last big update. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

If you are seriously thinking about buying a PS3, you should wait until July 15-21 to get the 60gb at $499. This offer is only at Circuit City.

Did they really fix the problem people were having with older HDTV's? (480p/1080i only) If so, that is wonderful news. I wonder why I haven't heard of it.
