Default Just got my PS3, firmware questions!

I just got my PS3, and after about 20 minutes of messing with it, finally figured out how to get it set to 720p for my television! It says the system version is 1.3 something? Is this up to date? I put in a regular DVD and it looked pretty great, so I am assuming the upconversion is working, but I have no way to know. As it came used, I have no books to look at, so just curious. I can hook it up to my cable modem with a little effort, but right now have no wireless network.

Am I up to date? Any tips?

PS - By the way, loving it so far!!!

It is denifinitely NOT upconverting DVDs, as this feature was only added a little while ago. Trust me, I used to play DVDs on my PS3 and they looked SD, but with upconverting they look very good, almost HD. By the way, no need to hook up modem, u can download update onto a CD/DVD and put in
PS3 if you don't feel like running a wire across. If u got 60GB use wireless, cuz when new firmware comes out in the future, push a button and walah, u got the new firmware downloaded. (Though u have to later hook up controller and install firmware)

Hmmm, I assumed since it was used, the previous owner may have already updated firmware and it might already be upconverting, but it is possible it is not. For right now, I think I'll burn to a disc. I'll have to see about wireless...the idea doesn't thrill me as I use a secure VPN for my work from home. Maybe I can get a router.

It is the 60 GB, by the way.

The latest PS3 firmware is 1.81 and DVD upconversion was supported only during the 1.80 major firmware update.

Visit us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates for more info

Enjoy!

All right, followed the instructions and burned the update to a CD, then did the system update. It is definitely upconverting now, and I have to say it looks even a bit better than my Toshiba HD-A2 was doing, and the HD-A2 wasn't doing a bad job! Awesome!

Thanks guys!

Congrats! I did the same thing, I was itching to go dual-format so bad, and the PS3 was the best choice for me. You wont regret it, it's an excellent piece of hardware. Thats coming from someone (me) who was previously content being 360/HD DVD exclusive. And despite what some of the fanboys have claimed, Blu-ray performs seamlessly, even with an "unfinished spec". And yes the PS3 upconversion is quite nice. Although I wouldn't say it's close to HD. All in all... for me it was $600 well spent.

What are going to be your first Blu-ray purchases? I jumped on Casino Royale, and House of Flying Daggers for the wife.

My first purchases were Open Season and Night at the Museum, I really enjoyed both of those...snagged them on eBay for $30 total! I will be adding Casino Royale, A Knight's Tale, Gone in 60 Seconds, and both Transporters as time goes by, but I'll have to hold off for a month or two...I really need to pay some bills for a couple months!

Not to mention, there are so many releases in the next few months, Disturbia, Blades of Glory, and Bourne Identity (although Disturbia and Blades of Glory will probably be HD-DVD purchases depending on the audio).

Sweeeeeet... all good movies. Although I havn't seen NatM yet. I think I'll be renting it this weekend. I'm looking forward to purchasing Bourne Identity and Disturbia as well. Esp. since Disturbia is 'supposedly' a good remake of one of my favorite movies of all time: Hitchcocks 'Rear Window'. Havn't seen it yet, but that will likely be a blind buy for me... anyway, enjoy!!!
