Default PS3 HDD Upgrade using 3.5" drive

I have recently stumbled upon the ability to upgrade a PS3 using the larger and less expensive 3.5" SATA internal hard drives but it does require the hard drive to be in an external enclosure and it has to use power from the enclosure and NOT the PS3. To do this you will need:

An external HDD enclosure for a 3.5" SATA drive
A 3.5" SATA Drive (I used a 750GB which yielded 698GB after formatting)
SATA Data extention cable with Male and Female ends 24" or longer
External HDD large enough to back-up your system

The first step is to Back-up your PS3 onto an external HDD and sync your trophies with the server. Next, Remove your PS3's HDD, the nice thing about this method is that you only have to remove 1 screw you can leave the old drive in the cradle/tray, and plug then SATA Data extension cable into the data side of the PS3's HDD bay, you may need to use needle nose pliers for this part because of the small area to work in. Now for the 3.5" SATA drive, install it into the external enclosure but DON'T connect the data cable for the enclosure, just the power as the PS3 doesn't have the power on the sata bus to power the larger drives. Now depending on the external case the next part may be difficult, you will need to cut a hole in the enclosure big enough to fit the SATA Ext. cable through and connect it to the drive. Now after you have checked all connections turn power onto your drive FIRST THEN turn on you PS3 and allow the PS3 to format the drive. You don't need to update your PS3 afterwords because all the user data and system information is kept on the PS3's internal memory and NOT on the HDD. The only down side to this method is that the PS3 will take up more room and you'll have to remember to always turn the HDD on first and then the PS3.
