Default ps3 and video playback

my first post here, I've been reading about standalone/ps3 playback and seems to be a good option as ps3 is only really 100$ more than the newest standalone in stores. I was wondering about further playback, I know it will play mpeg4 and x264. But are there any constraints of video size, framerate/resolution (720,1080,etc..), or anything else I should be aware of? I have made several backups of tv shows and movies to bring to work or on my laptop and wondering if I can play these off ps3 harddrive without issues? Most are .avi (xvid) 640x (for my fav show dvds) but i also have a few .mvk 720x and aac 5.1 (for a few fav movies)

Thanks for your time,
Freeballer

The PS3 plays back MPEG, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and MPEG-4 Part 10 (AVC). It should be able to playback VC-1 files but it hasn't been tested for hard drive playback. You will need to convert your video files to one of these formats to play them from your PS3.

Supported resolutions are 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. I'm not sure about the framerates, but you don't have to worry about anything 60Hz or lower.

If you network your laptop to your PS3 and use Windows Media Player 11, you can stream the files (music/pics/videos) from your laptop to your PS3 (as long as you videos are in one of the format mentioned above). The PS3 can handle pics in JPEG, BMP, and GIF (maybe JIFF too). It can also handle music files in MP3, AAC, WMA, and I believe MP4.

I hope I answered all your questions.

I've found issues with all the free ones I've used. So far the one I like the best is Blaze media Pro http://www.blazemp.com/
