Does PS3 Convert 1080i to 1080p

Simple question: Does PS3 Convert 1080i to 1080p?

I did try to search for this question, but given the search terms it turned up way too many threads to wade through. I assume it does, but just curious as my TV itself sucks at converting interlaced images to progressive, so I'd rather the PS3 do it. Also, is there any special setting I have to select to make this happen at the source rather than at the TV?

Also, I have the whole thing routed in the middle through an Onkyo 605. Any chance it could do this, and if so, does it do it well?

Thanks for any help!

No, the PS3 does not de-interlace 1080i material. There are many BDs that have 1080i special features; the PS3 outputs them at 1080i.

Again, no, the 605 doesn't do anything to HDMI video sources.

Your TV should deinterlace it if it's 1080p...

Technically that's not true... there is/was a 1000+ long post thread on the official forums with complaints from users regarding 1080i. The ps3 unlike the 360 cannout output 1080i with it's games. This was particualy problematic for the first year after launch as many early HD adopters (Myself included) had older sets with only 480p/1080i functionality. All of our games would only be transmitted as 480p. Since that time alot more games have offered 1080i, however it's been an issue since day one.

However, if your question is in regards to movies, then 1080i is a viable output. However if you select 1080p in the ps3's menu (or 720p for that matter) the PS3 will output it at that setting. Granted, if material is mastered in 1080i (or 480i) then it won't be a true 1080p signal, but the ps3 will perform the upconversion for you.
