BD/DVD Audio Output Format (PS3)

So I was wondering what is the difference with the settings for BD/DVD Output format on the playstation 3. There are settings for HDMI & Optical Digital. They can be either Linear PCM or Bitstream. What are the differences?

I read that your receiver does not do anything with audio via HDMI, so set the PS3 audio for optical output to bitstream.

thank you. It was already at that setting.

It means how do you want the PS3 to handle audio between HDMI and TOSLINK Optical.

Assuming you have a 5.1 (or more) surround set up.

For HDMI, it is best with LPCM. It's the key feature for the PlayStation 3. It will decode all audio soundtracks, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD from your BD and DVD, into LPCM 5.1 and streams it out to HDMI. You will need a receiver that is capable of reading LPCM 5.1

For TOSLINK Optical, the recommended setting is Bitstream. This will stream the raw Dolby Digital or DTS soundtrack out for your receiver to do its job. Bitstream is only limited to Dolby Digital and DTS, and not the HD formats. If you set this to LPCM, you will end up with LPCM 2.0 audio only. This is because there is a limited bandwidth on the TOSLINK cable itself.

Need more info

Thanks for the info, but you left out some important details. On the PS3 there are 2 different bitstream options (mix) and (Direct) Which is better for fiber optics? :iconps3hq0:
