Fantastic!!

This move looked awesome, but for some reason it barely even got a limited release.

For anyone who doesn't know, it's basically a modern day 80s horror movie. Awesome stuff.

I wanted to see this but couldn't find it anywhere near me. I will probably buy this right away, assuming it has a decent price. Something I read somewhere (don't remember, probably comment on IMDB) called it (paraphrasing) "like something Spielberg would have bought to stuff in a drawer to prevent competition w/Poltergeist"... That comparison got my attention.

You can rent it digitally from a lot of sources. I watched it on Xbox Live the day before Halloween... Great movie!

I have been wanting to see this ever since i saw the preview. Looks like a great horror movie. Now if Lions Gate would just release Ti West's Cabin Fever 2 which has been delayed for what seems like years.

I have it on my DVR. It was an early premiere on HDNet Movies.

Excellent film. Captures the 80s horror movie mystique perfectly.

It reminds me of the influence the low-budget 70s films had on the 80s genre films. Kind of like how The Hitcher feels similar to Last House on the Left in pacing and then again in the climax. Or how Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre laid the groundwork for audiences to connect with recurring villans like Freddy and Jason, and then to root for them over the victims.

The House of the Devil is obviously influenced not only by 80s genre films, but also by pop-culture during the decade, news, and even 60s/70s exploitation films. All of this stuff seems particularly relevant if you were a kid or teenager during the 80s. I'm 32, and it was like stepping into a time machine in many respects.

****MINI-REVIEW POSSIBLE SPOILERS (But probably not)****

Spoiler
HotD(Devil, not Dead ) spends much of the movie building the tension and setting up the final scene via the isolation of the main character and explaining her reason for being put in the position she ends up in. It's an extremely quiet, atmospheric movie, and the crescendo builds rapidly before the climax really grabs a hold of you, and then it all just explodes!

The focus is so centered around the main character that there are very few supporting cast members needed, so when events finally start to unfold it is clear where your allegiance lies. I wouldn't say you empathize with the main character exactly, but they do such a great job isolating her that she is your only grounding when the shit hits the fan.

I would definitely recommend this to genre fans, there's a lot to appreciate.

EDIT: Wow...I finally hit 100 posts.

This movie needs more appreciation. I really wish they'd make more like it. I just bought it for $10 at BB, and it just... it's really flippin' good.

Its worth a watch but you'll have to make up your own mind. I dont think its quite as good as some are saying but you'll find out soon enough. Rent first if possible. Over-hype is always bad for a film since your expectations are now set quite high.

I agree... I was a bit disappointed with this one.
