Default "The African Queen" Coming To Blu March 23

MOD EDIT: As Arkadin first posted on the rumors that The African Queen was coming soon to Blu-ray last fall, the thread title has been updated now that the release has been confirmed for March 23, 2010.

If we are to believe Amazon, the answer is yes.
This John Huston classic, starring Bogart and Hepburn, has never been released on dvd in the US
(There is a crappy UK release), but
is now up for pre-order on amazon with no release date.
the rumors have been out there for some time that Paramount was finally going to release this film--probably the number 1 most important American film still MIA on dvd.

that'd be hilarious, a film not hitting dvd for this long, but hitting blu (even w/ day and date dvd) this early in the life of the format.

well if they have recently worked on it, it makes sense that it would get a Blu as well as a dvd release.

but whoever said things make sense, sadly. just like how much money criterion put into the restoration on titles like The Human Condition, this late in the game, and it only hit dvd.

Yea I totally agree with you that both BD and DVD releases could be in the works.

I checked Imdb.com and found links for classicflix.com, which in May said Paramount was planning an Oct. 13 DVD release for The African Queen as part of their Paramount Centennial Collection series. That obviously didn't happen, but it does indeed sound like it's being worked on.

Absolutely not and that's because Paramount has invested NIL in its classic catalog titles. My bad -- they are finally set to release their first classic title -- "It's a Wonderful Life" -- a week from this coming Tuesday.

No, but it sounds like Paramount's Centennial Collection pretty much flopped. They put out about two titles every couple of months, from November '08 to May '09, and then nothing until Chinatown on Oct. 6. And they started with numbered spines and nice slipcovers, and dropped the slipcover with Chinatown, pissing off a lot of collectors. MSRP started off at $24.99 and dropped quickly to $16.99; I see where some folks posting on dvdtalk that they have picked up Sunset Boulevard, Roman Holiday and Chinatown for as low as $3 at Walmart.

So hopefully Paramount has realized most folks aren't going to pay $20+ and in many cases double-dip for something on standard-def DVD and will move the entire collection to blu-ray. I think it was pretty stupid of them to not do the collection on both blu-ray and DVD from the beginning.

Having said that, I think I'll pop in Walmart when I'm out shopping this afternoon - I'd pay $3 for Chinatown and Sunset Boulevard on DVD.
