Great article!

I definitely agree with Criterion getting an A, their releases are simply perfect.

Lionsgate, I have to disagree a bit. Lionsgate has had some pretty terrible movies come out this year, but the actual quality of the Blu-rays have been superb, there's nothing more they can really do besides pick better movies to pick up.

MGM has improved so much. The Bond releases are fantastic.

Universal has definitely done great this year. The Bourne set was fantastic and they've released a ton of catalog titles. They've moved from HD DVD well.

And finally, poor Weinstein Company...

Good synopsis, if I think you were a little light handed with a couple studios I think. But, 'tis an opinion piece as reviews are.

Anyway, I want to know if you have any quick comments on the small studios, like HBO, CBS, Blue Underground, and any others I can't think of right now.

I'd personally give HBO an A+ for high quality, timely releases that are also reasonable in price (comparable to DVD, industry please watch what HBO is doing!) Little to no post-processing crazyness. (DNR, EE, etc mostly minimal if any.). CBS has the original ST series which is outstanding so far and I'm looking forward to season 2. Blue Underground has more the cult classic area, but they have treated the releases I've seen with great respect.

Good reports, I enjoyed reading them.

Criterion has especially impressed me with their releases. I know they won't resort to DNR and while I enjoy a good faithful re-mix of a soundtrack, I can appreciate the purist approach and they are lossless.

I've only seen "The Last Emperor" and "The Third Man" but these are spectacular releases, especially the first one as I got a chance to revisit a classic on BD for the first time, I hadn't seen it in about 15 years and I was quite impressed.

Don't you mean the double dip was on Casino Royale and not QoS? Unless I missed something, I don't recall a double dip on the newest Bond, QoS.

I just added that link to show the pattern had already continued with the first Daniel Craig Bond. No QofS yet, but give it time. Not much time. It will be out before you know it!

OHHHH wait, I see what happened. HTML snafu. Change should go live shortly.

So Disney who has released a dozen films in 2009 gets a B+? Wow.

Actually in Q1/Q2 they released 10 less catalog titles compared to Q3/Q4 of last year. And the 3 "new" catalog titles they released were 8 Mile, Street Fighter and a bastardized version of Do The Right Thing.

I thought it was pretty obvious the grading scale was based on the quality of releases, not quantity. But, I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed in the amount of releases from Disney. I'm not a fan of animation, so those Pinnochio and Snow White releases have zero appear to me. Sure would be great if they'd step up the production schedule and mix the offerings up a bit - like some of the Miramax movies when it was under the Weinsteins.

And I was a bit surprised Drew mentioned the annoying blu-ray promotions that have to be skipped but gave Lionsgate a pass. For me, Lionsgate is the worst offender for the volume of forced trailers on their blu-rays. And for that, they're my least owned studio - I only own one Lionsgate title. And I actually like how Warner releases immediately starts the movie without the main menu, and especially without touting the virtues of blu-ray to those who already own it, and especially no trailers. Yeah, it was a problem when the disc defaulted to the DD audio and you had to pause it and select the lossless, but now that Warner has switched to defaulting to the lossless problem solved.
