Default Weinstein Gave Up 'Inglourious Basterds' BD Rights

Interesting news from BD.com:
Quote:
Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that The Weinstein Company, beset by financial problems, is scrambling to secure the money to promote the theatrical release of Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds'. More importantly for us, Universal is now cited as having the domestic home video rights to the movie (including Blu-ray), much to the chagrin of Genius Products.

This is bad news for The Weinstein Company, of course, but good news for Blu-ray enthusiasts, because TWC's support of BD has dwindled recently. 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' was released day-and-date with DVD; 'The Reader' was released two weeks after the DVD; and 'Outlander' and 'Fanboys' haven't received a BD release at all.

On the other hand, with Universal a day-and-date BD release of 'Basterds' is all but guaranteed.

With a bit of luck, Weinstein may flog other titles that they have the video rights for (such as Suspiria in the US) to someone who will ACTUALLY release them on Blu-ray.

Agreed. They've still got some HD DVD exclusives I'd love on BD.

Wow. Another major movie studio doing poorly. Too bad for Weinstein.

Then a lossless DTS-MA soundtrack is assured.

Weinstien has some cool stuff but honestly, not very much of it would be considered mainstream. Now, that doesnt matter - unless you're trying to sell blu-ray discs which is a smaller market to begin with. I think this is a case of their titles maybe not selling as well as they'd hoped. Simple business decision.

It'd be nice if they had a few more solid, commercially successful offerings instead of cult-ish films or film-noir stuff which seems to make up a decent amount of their catalog and doesnt sell well on blu-ray at all. It barely sells well on DVD.

The Weinsteins have been incompetent for a number of years and it's no surprise that they're failing. They just cannot do it on their own. The home video releases have been a nightmare.

Weinsteins selling off properties?

Good, now we might actually get Grindhouse and Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. Good riddance to the Weinsteins
