Default Why arent more movies in 7.1?

I recently upgraded to a reciever with lossless decoding and to 7.1 speaker set up. I've seen lots of systems they sell now days having 7.1 in box, bringing it to a bigger market.

Is it more expensive for a studio to make movies in 7.1? Is it something they do in studio or does it require extra equipment on set?

It has to do with how they were mixed. They would have to re-mix films to take advantage of this set up.

It really doesn't matter too much as your receiver will send the signal to the 2 extra speakers. It won't be true 7.1 but there shouldn't be that big of a difference. I haven't had a chance to hear one of the true 7.1 movies like Pan's so I could wind up eating my words. I'll check it out soon as it's sitting on my shelf.

In actuality it's the 2 rear speakers that are carried over. The sides are standard as they are the original rears in the 5.1 set up.

Mine sound great as well. It's just a little extra something to help envelope you.

Probably because most studios figure most people don't have 7.1 set-ups.

Most people don't even have 5.1 set-ups.

7.1 is great, but most people aren't ready for 7.1 set ups yet.
Besides...the vast majority of films aren't mixed in 7.1 to begin with.
The way I see it is that for those who have 7.1 systems like I do...
having a 7.1 track is like having an extra bonus feature...
and some films will probably be revisited later and mixed into 7.1
if they sell well in 5.1 the first time around.

It's overkill, a way to get you to spend more money.

I highly disagree, as do many others.

A 5.1 track matches theater speaker systems. Other than some art house, indy, foreign, or all woody allen movies, 5.1 is usually available. In addition, 7.1 is something created for specifically Blu-ray as DVD only supported up to discrete 6.1.
