What's the deal with THE ISLAND (Ewan McGregor)? Is that on Bluray in the States or not? I dont see a review here

US, no. Overseas, yes but with regular old DD audio.

Edit: It is out in the UK and region free. I'm sure it's a direct copy of the UK HD DVD, so the PQ varies from shot to shot. Looks like more to do with camera's though. Some closeups match the best PQ I've seen while the very next shot looks quite soft. Overall, it's pretty good though.

In the US? Pretty sure it's not out. In fact, I couldn't find a review for it anywhere.

I have the HD DVD import and the Blu-ray is pretty much the same save for some of the HDi enhancements that the BD is missing.

Video quality is top notch. Not reference quality but the detail level and skin tone quality are excellent.

Sadly, since its a Warner release, both the HD DVD and Blu-ray share the same 640kbs Dolby Digital track but its a barn scorching one. The city escape alone just crushes the DVD's 448kbs DD track.

Extras are extremely slim...just a 15min making-of. I never watched this but its the usual Warner instant play. Only a pop-up menu to choose your settings and select the featurette.

The difference between the HD DVD I own the Blu-ray is the HDi enhancement that allows you zoom in and pan during the film playback. Not a biggie since the rest is the same.

The US Blu-ray will be by Paramount so it will should have Dolby TrueHD plus director commentary and an HBO special featurette. If you can't wait, this import will make you happy but be prepared to spend at least $25 US on it.

On another note, why would you not want imports? Kung Fu Hustle is edited for content on the US BD but the Hong Kong and Korean BDs are the original cut. Almost Famous, The Island, Peter Pan (2003), and Step Up are currently available on imports only.

With the current strong US dollar you can buy The Island direct from amazon.co.uk for a low price. I did last month and it was still cheap then.

Wow, someone forgot to remove their crabs.

Anyway, I would love to get this movie on Blu-Ray, but an import is no good when the audio is not in high def, and the best thing about The Island IS the audio.

I am still waiting for a U.S release on this flick, but I heard the import was pretty solid.
