Default Has anybody tried backing up their Blu Rays yet?

I was wondering if it is even worth the effort to try to back up my Blu Ray collection at this time. I saw the rewritable drives have fallen below $200..and the blank Blu Ray discs are $5 a piece now...

I just don't see the benefit of backing up movies.

Kannisto does it to put english subs on his foreign imports that don't have them. I guess its good in some ways like that.

I was just wondering how hard it is to burn a blu ray, and if its even worth it at this point? I've been waiting a while for the prices to drop, but they could still drop so much more...

It wont be worth it until the hardware drops in price. $200 is still too high. And I would want 50 gig writable media at a good price.

For me it's worth it.

I use TSRemux, and AnyDVD HD, and just recode it to BD format with what I want selected (Like the better audio)
Its not hard burning BD, but time consuming...

But for me it's fun..

Btw, where in the hell are you finding $5 BD discs?
Stores don't have any that price.

And where on the internet?

In Japan it's now easy to find BD-R 25 GB discs at around 3-4$ and BD-R 50 GB discs at around $6-$8. Rewriteable discs are still a bit more expensive but not very, e.g. BD-RE 50 GB can be now bought at around $10 - $13 at the cheapest. It's mainly because of the quickly growing market for BD enabled HDTV recorders, the chepest discs are mainly for those recorders but they work fine for other purposes too.

I tend to buy only Sony and Panasonic blanks as I have had some bad experiences with TDK (cheaper but less reliable). Even the best brand media is within those price ranges here now.

I do some personal backups to remove region code in case of my region B locked imports / to remove forced subs especially in case of French imports and to add subs in case of foreign movies without English or Finnish subs. I often use rewriteable discs for it so I can just watch the backup and later reuse the disc.

I don't exactly back them up in 1:1 quality: I re-encode them to fit on a DVD-9, but I can't wait until BD media becomes affordable (~ $5/disc for RELIABLE media). Right now, it makes no sense to back your movies up. I'd rather have a studio master that will be significantly more reliable WITH the case, jacket, etc. than pay roughly the same amount for a disc that I burned.

Why would you want to back up blu-ray movies??

They are alot more resitent than DVD to scratches and stuff and wear and tear wont be a problem with blu-ray.

I know some people rip them to there PC and stuff so they can get full HD sound or something.

But overall it will just be a waste of time and money backing them up for no apparant reason
