Default Just to get all of this Fox/MGM War/Western Blu Ray stuff right

I already have the 2 disc special edition remastered version of the following:

Bridge Too Far
Patton
Butch Cassidy
The Longest Day
The Sand Pebbles
Battle of Britain(The one I own isn't a 2 disc set)

From what I can see, the MPEG 2 transfer on the Blu Ray of A Bridge Too Far, Butch Cassidy, The Sand Pebbles, and The Battle of Britain is the same as the last DVD's.

According to most reviews, they offer hardly anything in terms of Picture Quality improvement.

But for some reason, THANKFULLY, Fox did reencode on MPEG 4, Patton and The Longest Day, the 2 new Blu Rays are supposed to look great.

Oh well, at least 2 out of 6 isn't bad.

Same PQ as DVD my ass. Even bad Blu-ray transfers are better than any DVD version.

The review on DVDBeaver for Sand Pebbles makes it sound like a decent upgrade to the special edition DVD. Sure, it's not a huge difference, but if you check out the screens the Blu-Ray version does look superior.

I'll let The McQueen do the talking here for Sand Pebbles. As you can see down below, Patton and Longest Day get a huge boost.

Sand Pebbles

DVD

Blu-Ray

Patton

DVD

Blu-Ray

Longest Day

DVD

Blu-Ray

I have "Butch Cassidy" and it is definitely an upgrade.
Did Fox do a restoration that would have been even better? no.
I have yet to see a single hd dvd or Blu-Ray release that does not improve upon the sd dvd release so I'm not sure what you are getting at.
Now are some Blu-Ray's better upgrades than others?
absolutely.

Yes I agree. I think this will be my 1st Blu-ray B&W picture.

I'll second that Butch Cassidy looks pretty good (sure it could have been better I bet with a newer transfer) and has to be better than a DVD.

Sand Pebbles, on that shot, looks better on the DVD version.

I disagree, the colors are much better and the text is sharper.

Dude, get your eyes checked ASAP. Seriously. Sharper and much more detailed on the BD (not to mention the DVD transfer is too dark). I'm impressed. The reviews I have seen for Patton, which I have much greater interest in, are spectacular so I will probably blind buy it. After all, it garnered Best Picture and Actor awards plus I believe Coppola's screenplay took one home as well. Sounds like a great war drama.

Patton

The Good

Terrific presentation of a 38 year old catalog title
Natural color palette and very good color saturation
Interior sequences offer tremendous details and takes full advantage of the lighting
Very good texture detailing
Some scenes exhibited reference black levels

The Bad

Handful of outdoor shots looked flat probably due to photography's limitations or due to source elements
Flesh tones looked slightly uneven on certain characters except Patton
Resolution increase wasn't quite apparent in few scenes

The Ugly

Nothing to do with the PQ

Francis Ford Coppola introduction was in 480p
Intermission Music at 1 hr 40 min mark that lasts for about 2 mins
Hanging Mic wire in one shot
