Default Dave Mathews and Tim Reynolds High Def Audio comments

I bought Dave Mathews & Tim Reynolds Live at Radio City Music Hall on Blu Ray. And I gotta say, i'm not one of those buy concerts on DVD, Bluray people, but I was blown away by this.

I actually switched it over to the uncompressed stereo track and the Dolby TrueHD track and it sounded WAY better than the regular Dolby Digital 5.1. But heres the wierd part: I DON'T have an HDMI connection to my reciever. I only have it hooked up to the reciever via optical.

From everything i've read, its impossible to get uncompressed sound or any of the High Res audio via optical. So how am I hearing a massive improvement by changing the audio settings on my Blu Ray player over to these? Am I imagining it?

And I brought my Bluray player to my friend who has a brand new audio rig with HDMI Pre-pro with built in high res decoders, and martin & Logan speaker set and listened to REAL HD audio. I gotta say, I was dumbfounded how my Onkyo HTIB was able to show such a dramatic improvement.

Any thoughts?
