Default PQ question on Planet Earth

I got Planet Earth via Netflix, and I'll have to say that I'm amazed at how inconsistent the PQ is. There seems to be a lot of compression artifacts, especially in the final "Ocean's Deep" episode. Why were they using BD-25 discs instead of BD-50s?

Yet, when I read reviews from this site and others I get a 5/5 for PQ. I can see that the source material looks very good but it seems to be too compressed.

Does Netflix use different discs than the ones you get when you buy the set? Anyone else have similiar experiences?

yeah there a few instances of problems, and I agree it is a little inconsistent. It has so much footage though I think people went out of the way to give it the benefit of the doubt which in this case makes sense to me.
It is a Warner release, thus SAME as HD DVD. that's the reason for the disc choice.

the Ocean's Deep has artifacts mainly because it was dark and they used filters on their cameras so we can see what's going on. you can also see artifacts in other night vision scenes but this is not the fault of the disc itself. it was the camera settings the cameraman had to use on location at the time.

On the back of the case it says something to the effect of "Due to the difficulties of shooting in certain environments, not all footage is shot on HD cameras."

Gotcha. Thanks for informing me! Regardless of the PQ it is a fun show to watch.

Funny, true. But I have recieved copies of discs from NF that were not the "consumer version". I've recieved discs(not BR nor HD-DVD) that had a greyish top with "NETFLIX RENTAL ONLY" written on them. Not the artwork on the consumer edition.

I found Planet Earth very boring, and the PQ is only decent imo.

Do you find any type of nature documentary entertaining?

Isn't there two versions one with superior PQ?
