Just curious, why with all the extra space blu rays have, did they chose to not use DD+?

Maybe because it's an inferior codec compared to PCM, True HD and DTS-MA?

It's optional on Blu-ray, required on HD DVD. DD+ uses 640 kb/s or 1.5 mb/s and the standard DD on Blu-ray already has increased bit rate to 640 kb/s.

yeah but not everyone who owns blu-ray has a high-quality receiver.

so for people like me (a college student) with limited funds it would be a nice option for every disc to have it.

To be honest, the people that own a new technology like BD players are much more likely to own that high-end receiver. They're technophiles, early adopters. I mean, half the reason to own a BD player in the first place is the increased video quality, the other half is increased sound quality.

I like TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, I use optical and I get 1.5 mbps (5.1 surround) from those. but when I use PCM I only get a 2.1 stereo.

Well, if you're able to listen to DD+, then your also pretty much guaranteed to be able to hear LPCM and TrueHD with a slight possibility of also hearing DTS-HD MA.

DD+ at 1.5 is basically the same as a lossless track there is no way you could really hear an amazing difference maybe slight very slight

and the reason DD+ isnt used is because its not mandatory for players to decode it so there is a chance some player wouldnt have the decoder and whoever bought that disc would be SOL
