Cool Blu-Ray video resolution

I am using an Panasonic DMP-BD10A disk player and a Sony KDL40XBR2 video display.I am of the opinion that Discovery HD Theater on Directv delivers a much more detailed and sharply defined picture than anything I have seen on any Blu-Ray disc. Comments appreciated

You will be in the minority. I have DirecTV and no broadcast I've seen has ever matched the quality of Blu-ray. DirecTV is notorious for compression artifacts. Check your display settings.

I second that, Planet Earth for example, look much better on my BD player than when it aired on Discovery HD.

Discovery HD Theater (now called HD Theater) will probably give you a better HD picture than any channel out there... Better than Blu-ray, not by a long shot... Check your setting on the Panasonic player and make sure you're outputting 1080p...

What Blu-ray discs have you tried?

HD Theater can be breathtaking, but a well mastered BD like Pirates should blow it away with its stability in movement and complete lack of compression artifacts.

The stuff on Discovery HD and ESPN look great in HD, but nowhere near the quality of Blu Ray discs.

Discovery HD does look incredible even though its only 1080i, most Tv shows look good in 1080i. but when you go closer to the screen, the picture isnt that good as blu-ray/hd dvd

I think you are noticing that video looks brighter/sharper than filmed sources like movies. If you are a Dave Matthews fan then I'd say you have to pick up Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City. That was shot using video not film and its 1080p/24 . I bet that will look more like Discovery HD theater but MUCH better. You will see what Blu-ray is capable of with that disc.
