I wish they would put the friggin Garo anime seasons into one set for each series already. I am not paying $90 for each season.

How much does Anime really cost? Even if they simply do a subtitle job and leave the original Japanese in place, these sets still cost a ton. With so many sources vying for my money, when I buy any of these I have to be pretty selective.

I know a little bit about the Anime industry, but not much. I know the margins on it aren't terribly high unless something happens to be a breakout hit. In some cases anime just ends up being a runaway success (think Dragon Ball and its spin-offs, or Pokemon, or One Piece, etc.). Sometimes shows or movies end up being fairly popular and get a few seasons, but most shows only get one season, which really isn't too different from how TV shows in general work.

When anime gets released to other regions, namely North America, both sides want to make a profit so that drives up the price. As you suggested, the process of dubbing it really tacks on a premium since two different sets of voice actors/actresses and technical teams need to get paid unless they drop the JP voice team (which would upset the purist portion of the market). Not producing a localized dub saves on up-front costs and royalties, but also alienates more casual viewers.

I think in the end, the high costs of anime comes down to how the market works. Like with most things, if the audience isn't very big, the per-unit cost of the product or service has to be higher to cover it. After a certain threshold is reached the costs go down and so do the prices. Same thing is true for regular TV and Movie releases, it's just with anime the market is even more niche usually, so the up-front premium is usually that much higher as a result.

Still, at least we aren't buying anime and such in Japan, where they can pay something like $50 US for just a few episodes. In a sense, anime is cheap outside of Japan. It just doesn't feel that way because we're used to buying season sets of non-anime shows for a much smaller by runtime cost.

Incidentally, a fair amount of anime is produced to drum up interest in the non-anime products. Namely Light or Visual Novels, manga, video games, and general merchandise. For example, the anime Overlord was really made as a fancy advertisement for the Light Novels. They never intended to produce more seasons of it, but it turned into a pretty big success in its own right. I mean, they even originally listed the first season as 'Complete Series'.
