I'm pretty sure this show was shot on standard-def video.

Even if it was, H264 is a much better codec than Mpeg2. A lot of tv shows on dvd would see a noticeable improvement even if they used the same master and then just coded it on BD instead.

But, even IMDB doesn't list the technical specs on how the show was made. Was it regular video or was it film?

The show was definitely shot on video tape. I'm expecting Sony to just boost colours, tweak the contrast, etc. Still, I'd be interested to see how the outcome is. If it looks as good as it can, I'll probably end up getting this sometime later this year.

When we think tape we think VHS, 260 lines at best but it was probably done on a decent professional tape. So we should still see some improvement from that as well. You say "definitely" but yet I still cannot myself see anything solid.

This is Sony, who usually doesn't let us down. However, without hard technical data, I would be surprised to hear that it was actually done on tape - the show always looked great, and even professional television cameras from the early 80s were not great. With the exception of a handful of sitcoms, I am pretty sure most stuff from this time period was still being shot on film - especially considering the lighting levels and miniature details used in the show. So it is possible this was done on tape, but I doubt it.

What I find fascinating about the announcement, though, is that they are also including the entire animated series in the package. I was a big fan of that when it aired. I am not really sure why they did a live action for HBO and an animated series for broadcast rather than simply syndicating the show(other than maybe it was expected that Saturday morning shows had to be cartoons?), but I am excited that they are doing this.

Have not had time to look at it yet, but this is a very nice package. Amazon had it delayed a few days past street date.
