Default 'Wild Card' - High-Def Digest Review

Matthew has reviewed 'Wild Card'. He says this is a flawed movie, but it's still pretty entertaining. Jason Statham fans will want to check out this Blu-ray.

I'm a Statham fan, so I'll catch this at some point.

Came in with low expectations. Came out with a wicked, wicked smile.
I can't recommend this enough.

Statham has been hit or miss in his last few or dozen films, and just
knowing there was a previous Burt Reynolds movie that I DIDN'T
previously know, that set my bar real low.

Then something in the opening titles surprised me, Corey Yuen's
name. No, this isn't Transporter. It's not one action sequence after
another. The action is bottled up, but it does eventually explode
under the build-up of pressure as the story heats up.

I was sucked into the story. I couldn't guess Statham's fate. Even at
the very end, I expected a U-turn (literally, you'll get it when you see
the ending).

Goldman's writing is an ace. Statham's performance is a face card.
That's a winning hand.

I agree. Watched this the other day by accident and REALLY loved it.

My only issue:
Spoiler
Statham losing everything at the card game. That was TOO predictable. Then again, this is Vegas

Otherwise, I absolutely loved this movie and will be buying it.

I agree that the very
Spoiler
last losing hand was predictable.

But that scene was great, because it made us really
understand how bad Statham's problem is.

And knowing that fact about him made the film's
ending scene that much more riveting. We can't
believe he's actually going to do it,
Spoiler
a U-turn is coming, a U-turn is coming, a U-turn is coming...
Spoiler
...end credits!
.

Caught up with this one on the weekend and it was a solid rental. I agree with the review that the pacing isn't like modern movies, but that's what I liked about it. Instead of continually accelerating, it would take its foot of the gas and let a little tension build up as to where it was going to go.
