Default Blu-ray disc can be used to improve solar cell performance

Select quotes from article below:

"Who knew Blu-ray discs were so useful? Already one of the best ways to store high-definition movies and television shows because of their high-density data storage, Blu-ray discs also improve the performance of solar cells—suggesting a second use for unwanted discs—according to new research from Northwestern Univ."

"Working with Cheng Sun, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at McCormick, Huang and his team tested a wide range of movies and television shows stored on Blu-ray discs, including action movies, dramas, documentaries, cartoons and black-and-white content, and found the video content did not matter. All worked equally well for enhancing light absorption in solar cells."

"The findings will be published in Nature Communications."

One would assume this is with a disc that does not have printed artwork on it.

I used to use CDs as a diffraction grating to see the color output of various lightbulbs.

Transformers and Fast & Furious discs make for great beer coasters as well.

This might be a true statement but if your glass does not make a good seal around the edges, the hole in the center of the disc allows some condensation to leak to the coffee table you're trying to protect.

In 2016 someone should test the new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs with solar cells. A 100GB Blu-ray disc has higher density data storage, and in theory, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs should improve solar cell performance even more. However,a scientist will need to test this theory to verify it is correct.
