Default 'Divergent' -- High-Def Digest Review

E. has reviewed 'Divergent'. Let's just say he didn't enjoy it. Here's why:

Sounds like the movie is just like the book. Just bland and unmemorable...I didn't bother to read the followups

I am wondering if E doesn't have a lingering bad taste in his mouth after A Haunted House 2 as all the reviews since then have indicated crappy movies.
But then again, Summit Entertainment, Teenagers, Same studio that did Twilight. I will watch this film soon and see if I agree.

This seems to be one of those reviews where the reviewer not liking the movie leads to a bias in the technical aspects. I see this frequently with disc reviews although it is often the opposite where the person loves the movie and is too generous with the audio/video scores.

I have seen multiple reviews of the blu-ray for this movie and they were all glowing regarding the video and audio (while lukewarm towards the movie) so that leads me to believe the reviewer let his dislike of the film factor in there.

^^ That would only be true or a possibility if you could find a consistent pattern in all my reviews, but unfortunately, reviews of 'Haunted House 2' and 'The Other Woman,' along with with my upcoming review of 'The Single Moms Club,' prove your assumption wrong. The transfer for this movie isn't bad, but it's far from great or perfect, especially because of the obvious banding in several scenes.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash
we have very little reason to be interested in them.

I respectfully agree on this point.

I think the 7.1 surround was fantastic with plenty going on in the background and the video was equally good.

The movie itself isn't the Hunger Games. TRUE, but then again, it is an unfinished story. I like Shaine and I am intrigued. For some reason I am really feeling this movie and perhaps like the Golden Compass I am in the minority.

There were changes from the book (like more people dying in harsher ways for one), that I think shouldn't have happened, but for it is worth, I think this is an unfinished story that is a slow boiler.

Shaine is a very good actress and I am hoping for more!

I enjoyed the movie. I didn't think it was a great 5-star movie or something, but felt it was better than 1 - maybe around a 3. Yeah, some of the plot points don't make a whole lot of sense, but the movie was fun, and there seemed to be a good story to it. Sadly, i saw it opening weekend, not knowing it was a teen-romance novel, and it was me and my buddy, surrounded by 600 tween girls. We enjoyed the action and the story, but I think the girl behind me was going to have a heart attack when the lead character took off his shirt. This movie is like porn for underage girls.

For the rest of us, there is a fairly good story there, it is easy to follow, the characters are pretty well fleshed out. The only things I really have issues with are 1) even though the story is pretty good, its kinda unbelievable and 2) the movie is obviously pandered more toward the preteen girl crowd. But, hey, what can you expect from the company that gave us Twilight. To be fair, this movie is WAY better than that Twilight garbage.

This should definitely be higher than one, but that's not to say I thought it was great or anything. The best thing about the movie is that it's fairly true to the novel. Probably the best (in terms of keeping true to the book) adaptation I can remember seeing. Even has an somewhat important scene that was cut because it would raise the rating to R, as a deleted scene (though its absence leads to a person who just goes M.I.A. partway through the movie). I'm a bit iffy about the lead actress though. She's OK, but I'm wondering if a different casting choice might have been better.

I'd say people who liked the novel would definitely like the movie.

Wasn't this flick supposed to be good?

Can't believe I wasted $3.99 on renting it. I couldn't have bought a pen, or maybe a Big Mac, no shoe polish... anything really.

Further, lead actors jeans were a little too tight.
