Default 'Sh˘gun' - High-Def Digest Review

We've just reviewed 'Sh˘gun'. Bryan says the show holds up 34 years later, and it looks incredible on Blu-ray. Highly recommended. Here's why...

Wow I remember this miniseries but too young to have watched it.

Is Chamberlain's performance really "laughable"?

I personally thought he was exceptional in Shogun. I would substitute "outstanding" for "laughable".

My dad made me watch this (which was weird), and I was like 9. I remember enjoying it well enough, not the biggest surprise, since I was well into my "ninja days"...I wouldn't mind re-visiting this. Those kind of shows were pretty neat for someone that never had cable growing up. I especially loved V when it came out.

I remember my ninja days back in the mid to late 80s. Great memories.

Read the book, saw this too. I can't say I remember much about the miniseries (which I saw via DVDs borrowed from the library) though.

I might grab this eventually.

Did they call them war lords in the miniseries? Seems odd that a story set in Japan, and especially in that time period that they'd refer to a daimyo as such. Mind, I'm not exactly sure what the difference is between the terms 'war lord' and 'feudal lord', if any (other than perception anyway).

I bought this miniseries on a whim from Sams Club on DVD for $20(later sold for $120 as it was long out of print). I enjoyed it quite a bit, everything but Chamberlain's performance. Don't think I could ever watch it again.

Yeah I was happy lol. I was about to trade it at Movie Trading co, I saw they were gonna give me $22 for it rather than the $2 norm, so kept it and threw it on eBay.

My recollection from watching this on broadcast in my younger days was that this was a quite fantastic, gripping & well-made drama. It kept me anxious to see each next night's installment.

That's why the rushed ending stung very badly (as though they ran out of cash and needed to wrap-it-up quickly instead of making an additional part). Fair warning to any new watchers of this. If my memory serves, after watching a lengthy story that definitely had plenty of time to breathe, the last 10-15mins abruptly time-lapsed & tied-up loose ends.
