One of the best musicals I've ever seen...and one of my personal favorite movies.
I don't think I'll be upgrading to the BluRay though. I saw the movie in the theater and it really wasn't very pretty, so I doubt the BluRay would offer much of an improvement.

Based on Luke's comments in the Video review, his 4 stars for Video were
generous. It's "better than the DVD" [especially with all the "ugly compression
errors (despite the disc being a BD-50) like banding, artifacts, aliasing and
crushing"] isn't worth 4 stars, in my opinion.

Luke's 5 star love of the Movie Itself has nudged up his Video rating. If Luke
hated the film, no way it gets 4 stars for Video.

You've got to remember that the video presentation rating is based on its original quality. For example, a transfer of a VHS movie is never going to look as good as a celluloid transfer. The video quality rating is relative to the original presentation. In that way, this disc is definitely 4-star material. All of the flaws that I mentioned were absolutely present in the theatrical presentation. A good transfer can only clean up so much - not the film's original highly flawed $150,000 presentation.

I thought the video quality was supposed to be based on aesthetics. Otherwise moves like 28 Days Later wouldn't have received 1 1/2 stars for PQ.

It's a mix of both criteria. The final score is ultimately up to the reviewer's discretion.

Hence my point of Luke's 5 star love of film itself affecting his rating of the
Video.

The same logical reasoning gives 2 different conclusions:
1) It looks as crappy as it did in the theater, so 4 stars.
2) It looks as crappy as it did in the theater, so 1.5 stars.

Such is life. Inconsistent criteria used to make judgments.

Unless the editors of HDD just lays down the law and states this is the way
we are doing business. The reviewers can caveat all they want in the
content of the review, saying they would have preferred to score it X, Y, & Z.
But the uniform criteria says we are doing it this way.

We calibrate and set our Videos and Audio to reference; we should be able
to do the same with ratings criteria. Or at least try to.

I completely understand what you're saying with "inconsistent criteria," but anyone who remembers how flawed 'Once' looked in theaters will expect the Blu to look the same way. You can only clean up so much of a broken thing. And it's not like my 4-star video review is trying to sweep the flaws under the rug. I listed the imperfections in the body of the video review.

I get what you're saying, but don't think that it's a problem. This is a very rare instance. It's not often that you see us reviewing movies with basically non-existent budgets. Films of this size are pretty rare these days.
