I heard some BAD stuff about this one, but I'm debating picking up the 3D version for $20 at Best Buy today.
The negatives were: Bad editing Not REAL action (wirework) BAD CGI RZA (who I like, in a bad-acting sort of way) REALLY bad CGI Unexciting fight scenes Terrible story But, I'm considering it... |

It's bad. If interested...just rent it. You won't want to see this more than twice. Once is enough.

Being relatively new to 3D at home, I tend to jump on any 3D film I haven't seen prior. After being burned by 'Pompeii', I'm more cautious. |

I don't understand the obsession with 3D. It's dying. But, to own a crap film because a dying format lacks content, is hardly a justifiable reason. It's a bad movie. Awful, actually.

I'm thoroughly disenchanted with Tony Jaa at this point. Ong Bak seemed fresh at the time, but then it had two baffling prequels released. The Protector was OK, and seemed like an actual sequel to Ong Bak, but then Protector 2 happened, and I don't even want to watch this one.

Whatever evidence of its death, must be judged in the context of declining physical media sales, declining (domestic) box office receipts, declining variety of smaller films being produced (only mega tent-pole pictures get screen time). I wouldn't be surprised if Criterion releases are being sold in few numbers today than they were 5, 10 years ago. Would you then say that classic films are dying? That it is a dying format that lacks content? I'm only guessing on Criterion sales figures, but I imagine the whole industry has the same declining sales figures. Never did I believe that 3D was going to be done in every film. So I'm not about the believe that 3D is dead and will not be done in any film. ----- Protector 2, 3D or not, does sound horrible. |

Death of 3D? Why are studios still spending time on even old movies such as Creature From the Black Lagoon (in 3D) if the format has died?
I think 3D could very well be dead in the U.S. but that's because of the studios more than anything.

But, below is how I generally view 3D in the overall landscape of film today: a) Films with no need for 3D, in any way. Let's say, 'Blue Jasmine' or 'Nebraska'. b) Films where 3D could make sense, but just because it's a visual heavy movie. 'Need for Speed', or 'G.I Joe' come to mind. c) Films where 3D boots the enjoyment to a movie from forgetable to fun. 'Hanzel & Gretel' and 'Flying Swords of Dragon Gate' are good examples, for myself. d) Films where 3D takes a great movie and makes it even better. Such as, 'Pacific Rim' and 'The Hobbit: Unexpected Journey'. e) Films that are meant to be seen in 3D, and any less takes away from the intended experience. These are rare, but when done right are fantastic. 'Dial M For Murder', 'Gravity', and 'Life of Pi', IMO, all should be seen in 3D. I hear this about 'Hugo' as well (which I saw in 2D, and was left underwhelmed). |
