I have the UK steelbook. Will be interesting to see the treatment Criterion gives it. Love this movie.

Lot of nice July Criterion releases coming.

Never seen it, but why is this getting a release when other movies like Halloween do not?

Anchor Bay/Starz has the rights to Halloween and they aren't willing to give the film to Criterion or anyone else.

Scanners is controlled by MGM. The studio apparently have no interest in releasing the film themselves. Unlike Anchor Bay, MGM frequently collaborates with boutique distributors like Twilight Time, Shout Factory, and, in this case, Criterion.

David Cronenberg has a several titles in the Criterion Collection, including Videodrome and Naked Lunch.

Halloween was just one example. How about A Clockwork Orange, Escape from New York, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, The Reanimator, The Manchurian Candidate, Mothra, etc? I'm just trying to wrap my head around why some titles get chosen over others.

When I saw the spine number for 'Scanners', I was surprised that wasn't already in their catalog.

As Super VHS alluded to, it's up to the studios.

All of those movies are owned by different studios. Criterion can't just decide one day, "Hey, let's release Casablanca!" and go ahead and do it on their own. They have to license the film from Warner Bros., and Warner Bros. may or may not have any interest in licensing it to them. Casablanca is considered one of the "crown jewels" of the Warner catalog, and as such, the studio prefers to release video editions of it themselves rather than split the profits with Criterion.

Kain, you've hung around this forum long enough that it's perplexing that you haven't picked up on how basic things like this work.
