Default 'Norma Rae: 35th Anniversary Edition' - High-Def Digest Review

Shannon has reviewed 'Norma Rae: 35th Anniversary Edition'. He says the movie still resonates, especially with today's economic woes. This is recommended.

It's kind of remarkable that Fox agreed to Sally Field at all (legend is that Director Martin Ritt refused to shoot the movie without her in the lead). At the time, she was a young actress known primarily for the following: playing Gidget and both dating and starring in mindless comedies with Burt Reynolds.

I very much doubt that. Anyone in charge of casting and did even a tiny bit of homework would know Sally is an A-class actress, her work in Sybil, from 1976, 3 years earlier already proved she can do anything.

According to the bonus material on this disc, the studio didn't want her, but relented when Ritt insisted on it. Now whether that's an urban legend or not is up to you, but actresses like Faye Dunaway and Jane Fonda DID turn down the movie.
