1989 wow LOL
I enjoyed this movie
Good monster sci fi movie from back then.

I also remember Deep Star Six. There were a few movies all around the same time that had to do with under the sea survival.

Yes, Leviathan, Deep Star Six and The Abyss were all released in proximity to one another.

Yes. The Abyss was obviously the more successful movie. I never put The Abyss in with the other two only because I never considered it sci fi horror, where the others I did consider sci fi horror.

i still remember that summer, me and my dad had seen both Leviathan and Deep Star Six (i love that one and hope someone releases it) ...anyway so we were literally on our way to go see Abyss when we passed a theater playing Indy and the Last Crusade and me dad goes "wanna see the abyss or watch Indy again?"

Indy won out and to this day i've never seen Abyss completely. lol

Make sure you see the Special Edition of the Abyss that came out in 1993. It is much better, in my opinion, than the original 1989 version. Around $500,000 additionally was spent, several years after the theatrical release, on the 1993 version, to complete special effects that were intended for but never completed on the 1989 version. Also, the Special Edition takes the story in a somewhat different direction than the original.

I would think/hope that most people would agree that the 1993 version is a great movie while the 1989 movie is a good movie. I first saw the 1993 Special Edition on the 12" Laserdisc release which I think is where the The Abyss Special Edition was first released. I still have both the Widescreen and Pan & Scan 12" Laserdisc versions of The Abyss Special Edition.

Default Abyss coming on BluRay

The Abyss should be coming out on BluRay hopefully this year. Been waiting to see this on BluRay since about 5 minutes after getting my PS3.

I have not seen The Abyss from beginning to end either. My summer is similar to yours, as I fondly remember seeing DSS and Leviathan.

Let's hope the Special Edition version makes it to BR.
