Shannon what movie did you think should have won Best Picture?

I have yet to see this and am looking forward to seeing it. I hope I am not disappointed. I was VERY disappointed with last year's Best Picture winner.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash
we have very little reason to be interested in them.

Disappointed enough that I did not think it was Best Picture winner.
I thought Amour was much better.

I know I am probably in the minority.

42 should have won Best Picture, but - of course - wasn't nominated.

Of the 9 nominees, I would have voted for DALLAS BUYERS CLUB. 12 YEARS would have been fourth or fifth on my list, were I to rank them.

Again, a very good movie (mostly due to the second half of the film)...just not the best movie of 2013, in my opinion.

Roots. Django. Accurate. This movie had almost every slave dressed better than Fassbender and the stilted dialog would make George Lucas proud. Great movie. Am i the only one that noticed this? All the slaves were wearing the same clothes as the slavers. In Roots and Django, specifically, first shot. Slaves chained marching barefoot in the middle of winter. Hell one slave in 12 Years has a perfect fade and goatee. I mean come on! Good movie but best? I think not! Hollywood ruined this.

Fair review that I have to agree with. The first hour is very plodding--and I'm a person who loves Terence Malick, so it is not a question of wanting a fast paced film--that really almost made me want to give up on it. But the second half did have the dramatic narrative that made me feel invested in the character and his struggle. By the end, I was deeply moved and was won over. But it was a long time coming.

I absolutely agree. Very good film - but definitely not the best of 2013. Not even close. My problem with 12 YEARS is that it's nothing that we haven't already seen before. IF it was made 20 years ago, it would be the exact same movie that it is now.

Having said that, 12 YEARS was in my Top 10 of 2013 list. I can't help but wonder how many people voted for it "because if you don't vote for it, you're racist." Hell, even Ellen called that out during her opening monologue. Being a member of the Utah Film Critics Association (which did NOT give the Best Picture award), we took plenty of "You Guys Are Racist Heat" for it. (See the comments here at Awards Daily.)
