Wasnt this a 2 part film in HK? So they are cutting this down to 1 movie now for US (International) release?

edit: nm I am confusing this with A Chinese Odyssey... the 1st of the 2 movies was based on "Journey to the West".

I am guessing these are different movies altogether... at least I hope they are.

Depends. How long was the runtime of the two parts combined? If it's much more than about 2 hours, they've kept them separate without clarifying, since the runtime for this release is listed at 110 minutes.

There are dozens of films and tv series in China of this story. If you're not Chinese, it's probably confusing. They're currently making it yet again in 3D, a proposed Trilogy I think.

I LOVED this movie. I watched it last night, and was laughing more than any other recent movie.

This movie is hilarious. But the movie needs to be seen in the light that our
fairy tales: Paul Bunyan, Thumbelina, Tooth Fairy, Frog Prince, etc will seem
to be pretty ridiculous to foreigners.

I laughed, but I think I would have laughed much more if i knew more about
these Chinese legends/myths. I had to tell myself the scenes that were
stupid and silly, the humor must be lost in the translation.

timcharger, I think it did a pretty good job of explaining the concepts and mythology...enough to understand what is happening. I feel I went in with some knowledge of the Monkey King fable, but I can imagine you are right that there was some humor I did not have picked up on because of cultural differences (not having grown up with the fable, or any of the nursery rhymes.)

Like the giant foot guy...

At times it was funny, but I caught myself saying, what the hell am I watching?!

My wife walked by during parts of the film (she needed to do some chores and
didn't want to watch a movie); she would look up and say, I don't even want to
know.

I viewed him (as well as the other side character demon hunters) like a spoof, in a sense, of other Chinese martial arts movies/stories...like the characters from the classic 'Master of the Flying Guillotine'. One guy had arms that would stretch out (an inspiration for Dhaslim in Street Fighter 2). I don't think it was tied to a specific story...but I could totally be wrong.
