Day one buy for me - regular 3D version, not the box set.

At 161 minutes, is this the version Peter Jackson wanted or will there be a 185 minute version coming?

I'm done with these huge long PJ director releases. I'll take the 161. The first movie felt WAY too long.

What is your consensus guys, this one was better than the first, right?

I have yet to see this one yet. I heard it was good but had an ending that P'd a lot of people off (and I have no clue but am guessing it's a cliffhanger to make us wait for part 3 - if I'm wrong, please put a spoiler tag on your reply, if you so choose to reply specifically about that.)

As far as extended cuts, I say no when it comes to Peter Jackson. Yes, part one was way too long. The only movie that long which made good use of its time IMO was Terminator 2.

edit: OK I probably set myself up with that one.. I'll add It's a mad, mad, mad world to the list and leave open the possibility (since I haven't seen these yet) to: Gods and Generals, Lawrence of Arabia, Ben-Hur, and Apocalypse Now.

I'm in the minority that actually liked the slower pace of the first film. I have a feeling that Smaug, for me, will turn out like Two Towers did; the theatrical edition will feel like a sloppy, even clumsy middle piece and the extended will have the room to breathe it so desperately needs.

The great bits were still great: Thranduil and Smaug were amazing and I particularly loved the bits that PJ just let the characters have those talky moments. Those, I always felt, were more real and added to the feeling of a mythological, living world, better than the massive armies and fights.

I certainly hope that the extended cut and the final film next Christmas prove that PJ has a great idea in his head how this all will work, because I'd hate to have a talented director like him fumble this close to the finish line. Even if Desolation does stumble just a tad already.
