Default 'Shoah' - High-Def Digest Review

Bryan has just reviewed the Criterion Collection's 'Shoah.' He says this extensive documentary is the film of all films about the holocaust. A must-see for all.

Great review, Bryan! I love 'Shoah,' and have ever since I first watched it on cable. It's one of my long-time favorite documentaries.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash
we have very little reason to be interested in them.

I didn't even know this film existed. Thanks for the review. I will check it out, but not without some hesitation as it brings up horrifying things that are hard to shake. What man is capable of and has done is surely terrifying.

There were so many evils perpetrated in the 20s, 30s and 40s. I saw Joshua M Green speak and tried reading his book, Judgement at Dachau, but I couldn't finish. I have pushed myself deep into Timothy Snyder's Bloodlands and hit the same wall. Even if our own capacity for evil revolts me, we NEED these books and movies to remind us what happens if we forget our humanity. I've stood there at the Auschwitz camp and thought, "...so many shoes..."

I would like to see this, but not sure about owning. Low replay value and the fact that it's nothing but talking heads (is 1080p really necessary for that?), so it seems that Hulu would be the way to go for this (although Hulu isn't showing it right now, but hopefully soon). Anyway, I do have an open mind, but I probably would prefer to get three other Criterion movies that have the high replay value, rather than this.

i believe the whole documentary is available on youtube but it would be better to support criterion for this release or get a region free import

I'll put in on my wishlist, but I have other wants from Criterion that take priority. I'm hoping for one of those December Amazon super sales ($17.99 for $39.99 SRP, $20.99 for $49.99 SRP, etc). Likely I'll pick it up at some point or at least watch it on Hulu in HD should they offer it someday. I'm a WWII buff and this goes with the territory, however unpleasant it is to revisit.
