Default 'Side Effects' - High-Def Digest Review

David Krauss has reviewed Steven Soderbergh's supposed cinematic swan song. Here's what he thought of 'Side Effects.'

Got around to renting and seeing this.

David, you are so "right on" in your review, yet I gotta disagree with you. In sum,
my recommendation is slightly more positive than yours, 1/2 or 1 star more.

Great direction, the pacing; great acting, intriguing characters; great writing (for
3/4ths of the film, you say) "taut" & "hypnotic" thriller; those combined elements
aren't common in most films.

You wrote that "you expected more", but not because you walked into the
theater expecting more. The first two Acts were so good, that it raised your
expectations intra-movie, too much.

Yes, I agree the 3rd Act was the weakest part of the film, but not because it was
bad, but that the first two Acts were THAT good.

Instead of penalizing the film in your review for having a par 3rd Act, I would
credit the film for having a way above par 1st & 2nd Act.

Sometimes, it's a 6 of one or half a dozen other world that we live in.

Thanks for those comments, timcharger! I appreciate your perspective very much. (I've actually been quite surprised that this film, until now, had generated NO discussion whatsoever on this site.) While I stand by my original critique, I appreciate your viewpoint and can see why you might rate it slightly higher than I did. I think I felt more let down than you did by the final act. So much potential and such a great set-up, but like many films, this one seemed to cop out at the eleventh hour. But it's still very much worth watching!

It's too bad this film didn't generate more interest and discussion.

It's even worse that the subject matter didn't do so, too. (As I type this there is
a banner ad of some prescription drug marketing it's wondrous effects.)

The world was a better place before drug companies could use direct-to-consumer
advertising for prescription drugs. I understand ad buys for over-the-counter
drugs that has already gone generic. But prescription drugs should only be
marketed to doctors. Do we even remember a time when commercial breaks
didn't have phrases like causes blindness, anal leakage, suicides, and 4 hour
