Default 'Gate of Hell' - High-Def Digest Review

Aaron has reviewed 'Gate of Hell.' Here's his take on this Criterion Blu-ray release...

I'm interested in this release, but without special features, I'm thinking I'll wait until it's a real bargain and pick it up (under $17 on Amazon).

Nice review!

But this paragraph appears twice in a row:

Quote:
The color, oh man, the color! It's impossible not to get sucked in by the amount of beautiful color contained in this movie. There are robes of gold, red, purple, orange, green, you name it and the color probably exists at some point in this movie. The transfer treats all the color with love and care as they appear bold and expertly defined on screen. Colors, even bright ones like purple, never seem to bleed. The movie has a hazier focus structure, yet the colors stay in their appropriate places.

Haven't seen this yet and noticed it's going for $15, tempted to blind buy it.

I was tempted to as well but no special features. Granted at $14.99 that IS my price point for blu rays with no special features and this being a Criterion you know the movie got good treatmeant and I do like the booklets that come with the movies. But Aaron tells us:
"There isn't a booklet included this time. Instead it's a fold-out which contains an essay entitled "A Colorful History" by film scholar Stephen Prince. It also contains notes about the transfer along with the usual credits and special thanks. "

That's a big bummer.

EDIT: I just ordered it from Amazon. At $14.99 I couldn't resist. The story of the movie compels me to own this

I've owned this for over a month, got it for about $17 after coupons and discounts. Still have to watch it!
