Default 'Westworld' - High-Def Digest Review

Shannon has reviewed Michael Crichton's 'Westworld.' This is recommended. Here's why...

The movie seems so unknown and forgotten that I'm surprised to see it get a Blu-Ray release. Honestly though the movie for its time is great and to me and I'm sure a lot of other people, this movie IS Terminator (before Terminator happened*)

It is definitely not unknown, just unknown by younger generations. It made the rounds in theaters and later went on to pay cable channel airings and some airings on traditional broadcasters, but over time it was relegated to the back of the filing cabinet because people were tired of it, had seen it already, etc. Now it's getting a chance to be seen by younger generations as older people show it to their younger relatives.

Having rewatched it not long back, some parts haven't aged that well, but for its time, yeah, it was somewhat groundbreaking.

I agree. 'Westworld' may not be wildly popular like other movies from the 70s, but it's definitely not unknown either. There are tons more movies releasing on Blu-ray which qualify as unknown and a miraculous surprise to find on the format, such as the most recent 'From Beyond' and 'Timerider.'

I would equate 'Westworld' on par with 'Logan's Run' and 'Soylent Green' in terms of its popularity.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash
we have very little reason to be interested in them.

Ever since seeing the Simpsons parody (Itchy & Scratchy Land), I have been wanting to see this. Hopefully a European release will follow soon.

Julian - this release (like virtually all Warners' Blu-rays) is region free, so you should have no problems playing it, if you can obtain a copy.

It was released last year in France by Aventi.

Cool movie, haven't seen it in a long time. Still waiting for a real life Westworld, without the whole robots killing everybody thing.

Great movie. I remember that I could never find it on DVD, was it even released on DVD? So I'm a bit surprised it got a BR release but it sure took long enough. Yul Brynner was the first terminater and IMO was more menacing than Arnold ever was.

I would love to see a remake of this movie but of course all the younger viewers would be calling it a Terminater ripoff.

Hey, they remade that other Ah-nuld movie (Total Recall), why not remake this (non-Ah-nuld) movie while they're at it. It's not like Hollywood gets that many original ideas in any given year anyway
