Thumbs down

Is there a possibility of recalls on several bad discs ? A petition maybe?

You would hope so. This really needs to be done over. It's pretty bad.

I sure don't. Was looking through my set last night. Worth every penny.

Opened the set and picked this first. Saw it for the first time and the review is spot on especially the video part. However, it did not diminish the experience of enjoying this film. Que Sera..Sera..Whatever wil be..will be.

This is coming out on Criterion soon. I sure the quality will be a big upgrade.

No. The 1934 original, with Peter Lorre, is coming from Criterion.

The one here, in the Masterpiece Collection, is the 1956 remake. And this is the disc that we get for Hitch's only remake, sadly. The color fluttering is an unfortunate flaw resulting from a transfer from less-than-perfect elements. Much like 'Rope' (with it's "red halos"), the problems with 'The Man Who Knew Too Much' stem from a dated master and misaligned elements. Had Universal remastered these Technicolor titles from their original 3-strip, using the digital tools available today (i.e. Warner's Ultra-Resolution), the issues could've been diminished if not completely irradiated.

All one needs to do to appreciate this transfer is to compare it with the DVD, which looks simply atrocious. Unlike other "upgrades" like Rashomon, where I would probably fail a double blind test between the Criterion DVD and Blu-ray, this upgrade is obvious and significant. Something that should be taken into consideration and not just comparing it with other Hitchcock movies in the set (At least for those who are buying this as an upgrade, which I'm sure is quite a few).
