Oh, no. Another Northwesterner.

Welcome, Kevin.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash
we have very little reason to be interested in them.

Default A shaky debut

I went into this movie (on DVD...) being a fan of Wes Anderson, having absolutely adored everything about The Royal Tenenbaums. I found Bottle Rocket to be quite tedious. And yes, Wes Anderson happens to be one of those love them/hate them directors...
I had to be very patient while watching this movie.

However, the film simply bursts into life when the Anthony/Inez relationship is solidified. I mean, the rest of the film's story was just immaterial after that! Sure, there are plenty of funny bits and some serious bits, but all in all, I was floored by the love story, nothing else. The moment when Inez returns Anthony's love is rapturous!

Welcome Kevin, and thanks for reviewing one of my favorite movies of all time. I remember when this came out on VHS I watched it three times in one day. I immediately identified with the characters. Despite how ridiculous the storylines of Anderson's films and the actions of the characters are, there's an underlying feeling I always get when watching them that feels so real to me.

I can see how people watching Bottle Rocket after seeing his later films might have trouble with it, but at the time there was nothing else like it, and I still get that feeling seeing it today.

If you want to have a trippy experience, watch the documentary Grizzly Man with Dignan in mind. Timothy Treadwell basically is Dignan, if Dignan had been crazy about bears.

Seriously! They even kind of look alike. But the real similarity is in the intensity, the difficulty understanding people and society, and deep need to fit in and be cool... watch Timothy Treadwell filming himself running past the camera over and over, trying to get his cool running look juuuuust right, and suddenly you're watching Dignan. And Treadwell was a real person. It's surreal.
