El Bicho has just faced down 'Melancholia (2011).' Love misery? Enjoy!

I actually enjoyed this movie. Thought it had a very cool feel to it. That said I don't think I'll ever watch von Treir's new film 'Nymphomaniac'. Ick.

Thank you for finally reviewing this one! I disagree with your opinion (the movie is one of the best of the past five years in my opinion), but you're allowed to have one.

And I'm blown away by the picture quality. You absolutely NAILED the audio aspect of the disc, btw.

von Trier is not for everybody, but those of us who love his work REALLY love his work.

Thanks again for a great review.

I'm the opposite of you I guess. I preferred the second half a great deal more than the first. I almost wish the first half had been cut 50%, it dragged a bit too much.
Anyway, one thing I am unsure of. I know they are real life father and son....but I never got that Jack was Michael's father in the actual film. I just thought he was her boss and family friend. Neither IMDB or Wikipedia say he is anything but that (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanch...282011_film%29)

This is actually one of my favorite von Trier works, next to Breaking The Waves. I saw it on The Big Screen and that final shot really took the breath out of you. The audience was dead silent at the end for a good 7 seconds until somewhen went "wow!" and everyone felt they could breath again. I'm sure it doesn't have the same effect on a home monitor.

Good review, though.

I bought this on an import about a month before it came out in the USA. For us few stereo people around, it includes a stereo PCM track. It is region B locked.

Agree that this movie was an emotional tour de force. Watched it last year on HDNet movies (before theater release).
Still "sticks" with me. Exquisite visually.
But, IMO, "Melancholia" would never be a repeat watch for me.

Couldn't agree more with this review – especially the point about ‘‘Melancholia’’ (i.e, the gas giant) initially thought to be employed as a metaphor. To turn it into a literal sense ruined much of the experience for me also; although the film is obviously very well acted and in most parts beautifully shot.

@laddieluv – it certainly is an emotional tour-de-force that sticks with you. I've mentioned before that it almost felt like the director's own melancholia transferred from the screen to the viewer.
It won't be on my top list of rewatchable material either. Though I will revisit it at some point.

Sorry, but this is one of the worst and most pretentious films I have ever seen. The only emotion I felt was extreme hate for the characters (and director) afterwards.

Definitely wasn't my cup of tea.
