on a sorta related note....here in canada we have a giant video store chain called Rogers, actually they are a huge company having their own cable, internet and home phone/cell phone services. but they started life as a video store chain and eventually each store became a hub for those of us using their services. so you could deal with the cable/net/phone stuff through the any store instead of finding the few cable outlets.

anyway with video stores dying off in north america, they can be added to the list. they announced that they will stop selling and renting movies and video games and will just focus on the rest. so there wont be any (or least not much) store closings but they'll just reconfigure them. i had a feeling something was up when i received an email a few days ago annoucing a huge sale where movies were dirt cheap. lol

of course they sorta killed themselves...they've been offering movies "on demand" for a few years now. the same price as their store rentals but with the conveniance of just starting it up on your tv. its sorta like streaming i guess but not exactly. lol

well its not too surprising...better video and audio doesnt matter to the "average consumer", they just see something that looks exactly like a dvd and think its not worth the bother. hell i've met people who own an HD tv and say they cant see the difference..i wanna believe they just dont have it set up properly or aren't watching/dont have HD channels yet and think the tv automatically makes everything look better or something but yeah...some people are just that uninformed and close minded.

dvd surpassed vhs easier because it was a completely different physical product so "the people" gave it a shot because it looked better. and we were already pre-programmed with the thought that a cd is better than an audio cassette so it made sense it would work for movies you know?

at least blu-ray has a better place these days. its not some niche market anymore and all retailers sell them and (at least here) have pretty big selections. hell even the tv ads for movies when they hit video focuses on the blu-ray. so thats a good thing since it means it wont die out like laserdisc or something. of course the industry isnt helping the cause by giving dvd copies with most blu-rays these days.

DVD didn't have to fight another format for a year and a half like Blu-Ray did. And now Blu-Ray also has to fight online streaming/downloads. It's not the same open field any more. And of course there's a little thing called the economy which didn't suck nearly as much back when DVD came out.

There are catalog blu-rays that are a step down in some consumers view since there is no resume feature due to java and none of the special features from the DVD release are transfered over. Not to mention, some older titles are simply bad transfers. Then you have piracy which is much easier and more widespread than during the VHS/DVD transition. People can get digital copies from friends & relatives for free, rent and rip movies themselves for just a $1 each from Redbox, or use torrent sites.
