Default 'Kes' - High-Def Digest Review

Luke has reviewed 'Kes.' Find out if this Criterion release is worth checking out.

Luke, the original soundtrack of "Kes" is encoded as lossless 1.0 LPCM mono. The international "post-synch" redub is lossy 1.0 Dolby Digital mono.

Thanks for the review. It really sounds like a great movie, but because of the dialog problems, I've decided against buying it for now. Maybe they'll remix the soundtrack later on, to get more dialog clarity. It's unreasonable to expect people to turn on subtitles to understand this movie.

I've only seen a couple of Ken Loach films, but this seems to be a common problem. His characters generally have extremely thick accents, and he records them with microphones about 20 feet away for "gritty authenticity" or something.

IIRC, 'Riff-Raff' did play with English subtitles in theaters, despite the fact that the characters all spoke English. Unfortunately, his next film 'Raining Stones' did not. I couldn't make out a damn word anyone said in that entire movie. I brought my future wife to see that one with me. She still holds it over me what a miserable movie-going experience that was.

I came her to ask if Criterion were really issuing this with a lossy audio track, if it really is LPCM you really need to fix this in the review.

"'Ands off cocks on socks!"
"Gee off Jud!"

Been years since I've seen this, the book has been part of the English curriculum in Scotland for 30+ years. Everyone has to read it and sees the film in school.

Both tracks read as Dolby Digital on my PS3.

Then there's something wrong with your specific disc and/or the way you have your HT set up.

"Kes" includes 1.0 LPCM mono (24-bit/1.5Mbps) and 192kbps 1.0 Dolby Digital soundtracks. The original is lossless; the international redub is lossy. This is confirmed by a BDinfo scan, every other review on the net and checking my personal copy of the disc on my own 60GB fatty PS3.

Yeah, that's the way my BD player read it also.
