Default 'The Deer Hunter' - High-Def Digest Review

David has reviewed 'The Deer Hunter.' Find out why he believes the film has never looked better on home video, and why this Blu-ray comes highly recommended.

Wow. Might have to double-dip on this one and sell off my old Hong Kong version. Did not expect the PQ to be this significant of an improvement. It has received high marks over at dvdbeaver as well (although the application of some DNR is noted)

I found this film to be totally overrated. For a start, the film doesn't do enough to establish Mike as the main character, so I spent the entire film seeing Nick as 'The Deer Hunter' and ultimately couldn't care less about what happened to Mike.

Moreover, the ending is seriously weak, how Nick has somehow managed to survive Russian Roulette all these years and just happens to lose when Mike comes along. Even for a film that's just too much coincidence.

Interesting it includes clips of "'To Kill a Mockingbird,' 'Erin Brockovich,' 'Ray,' 'The Deer Hunter,' 'Born on the Fourth of July,' 'Schindler's List,' 'The Sting,' 'Out of Africa,' 'A Beautiful Mind,' "

Quite a few of those aren't on BD yet.

How can you say its the best it ever looked on home video if you've never seen the HD DVD? I won't be surprised one bit when the comparisons show more DNR making the HD DVD better. Many of the Universal HD DVDs are better than the BD.

100% correct. Can someone please compare the PQ of the BD against the HD DVD? It's sad David didn't do that. There are a lot of people who'd like to know this.

I don't like this film. Apocalypse Now is better.

There's some noise about heavy DNR on avsforum, and people saying the Studio Canal BD and HD DVD are better (and some saying the opposite) so confusion all round on this one. I think I'll stick with my HD DVD.

The DNR looks to be on the same level as The Big Lebowski. But then, some people like brighter colors without grain than having the grain and much greater detail level, so that's where the confusion is.

Actually, I think most people would prefer the DNR'd version (the average consumer doesn't like grain at all) so that's why they're doing it and will continue to do so.

I wish I could have compared the PQ on the BD to the HD DVD, but unfortunately I don't have HD DVD capability. Judging from Peter's review of the HD DVD's PQ, I would surmise the BD is on a par with that release. There will probably be some slight variances here and there, but overall they are probably quite similar. I apologize if I gave the impression that the BD is far better than the HD DVD; it is certainly leaps and bounds better than the DVD, which I did compare quite closely. I, too, noticed some DNR (which I mentioned in my review), but I did not find it to be at all excessive or generously applied, and I don't think it affected the film's integrity. In all, I was very pleased with this presentation.
