haven't seen this yet so can't comment on the movie itself but as a somewhat nostalgic fan of the cartoon, i was disappointed to see what they did with Azrael. its bad enough they used a real cat but to then use CGI enhancements just looks weird. like Odie in the live action Garfield movies, these shoulda been 100% CGI creations. then they could have made them a little more similar to their animated counterparts and in Azrael's case, i'm sure whatever shenanigans (yes i said that) he gets into...would look a little better with an animated cat.

anyway i'm sure i'll see this eventually. i was surprised how much i enjoyed the Chipmunk movies so i have a feeling this one will easily win me over. lol

I very much agree with the review. I will also add that Jonathan Winters is miscast as Papa Smurf. If the movie had used the cartoon Smurf voice actors (whichever ones are still alive besides Frank Welker), it would have been twice as enjoyable for me. But it's still decent, when it's not being stupid.

My god this film was atrocious - and I tend to like a lot of the child-friendly movies. Bad cast, bad script, bad acting. The entire human sections were awful with a stupid story, Katy Perry is one of the worst voice actors I've ever heard (everything involving Smurfette becomes a road to nowhere and completely drags), and for once I found Hank Azaria nothing but irritating.

well i 100% agree with you on Katy Perry. EVERY single point you mentioned about her is in the review. i REALLY don't get why they cast her.

just watched this last night in 3D.. way off from the cartoon series

Smurfette wasnt even an original smurf.. she was created by Gargamel
who in the h3ll is Gutsy smurf? where was Hefty?
No Yo-Hon and Pee-wee?
Jokey Smurf barely got any air-time=lame
Narrator Smurf? wtf

will, the movie DID mention Smurfette being made by Gargamel. he does mention her betrayal a few times.

Gutsy smurf is a poor stereotype, at least it wasn't played by michael meyers. i can imagine either yo-han or pee-wee in the sequel. narrator smurf was funny. it gave the film KANE, and KANE is awesome.

i think they had to take SOME liberties with the characters to make it work. yes, there are more than a few smurfs that we all know and (possibly) love that didn't get ANY air time, just one line and done, but that's due to so little of the film taking place in smurf village. i can imagine more time for some of them, like handy or jokey, come 2013.
