Been meaning to see this for awhile, primarily because it stars Anne Hathaway and seems to be partially set in Edinburgh (so few films are I feel duty-bound to give it a look in). Is it set much in Edinburgh or is it just the beginning at graduation?

Just the beginning and ending. I stayed in Edinburgh back on 2006 and the way it's put on screen does it justice. What a beautiful city!

I finally got around to seeing this, and actually really enjoyed it, but it is very emotionally manipulative, acutely sentimental and relentlessly sad. I found the bookends in Edinburgh hard to watch, the conversation with the daughter on Arthur's Seat and the end scene in the New Town especially. You really do watch people's dreams slowly die at the cruel hand of fate.

It's been so long since I'd seen a film like this I had sort of forgotten they existed, films that are really built with the sole purpose of making girls cry. I'm guessing The Notebook is like that also, although that is pure speculation.

It's beautifully shot (especially the Edinburgh scenes), and well acted (once you accept Anne Hathaway's accent is all over the place) and a really well written and funny script. The score is really good as well, and lots of banging tunes in there (amazingly even Black Grape).

Really glad I watched it, although it was a tough watch at times. I think it was better than 3 stars.

Did anyone ever see this? I keep forgetting it even came out. The book was one of the most manipulative things I've ever read.
