Default 'The Specialist' - High-Def Digest Review

Aaron has reviewed the turkey known as 'The Specialist.' Watch James Woods scowl at a branch. This movie is just silly from start to finish. This Blu-ray features pretty decent video and audio, extras are basically zero. A rental at best.

I understand the score for this movie, but I have to admit that I LOVE this movie! Just the entire premise of Stallone walking around blowing people up with bombs is just a riot to me! I also thought James Woods' performance was very good, he steals every scene in this movie. Then Eric Roberts is just bad ass in this too. You can't go wrong with the cast of this movie!

Although I gotta say, that ending scene where
Spoiler
James Woods walks on a trip mine in Stallones' pad, and he just bounces around the place getting blown up by one bomb after another, is just outright HILARIOUS! Pure cheese, but it was AMAZING cheese!

Aaron is mostly dead on with his reviews, and here again he hits the bear right on the nose!

So is Rental at Best better than Fans Only? (comparing to Cobra review which got lower scores)

Not really better or worse. The Overall Statement at the end is more of an opinion of the reviewer and how they felt overall about whatever they're reviewing.

I love this film! This was going to be a first-day purchase the minute it was announced. Needless to say, I got it on release day!

While this film will never go down as great cinema, it does go down as one of the few non-Rocky, non-Rambo films of Stallone's I like. While Stallone is his predictable self, it's James Woods who makes this film. While Woods is over the top, he's no more over the top than say a Tony Montana. Add in some good support by Rod Steiger and Eric Roberts (and to a lesser degree Sharon Stone) you have yourself an evening's entertainment.

I have to agree with the picture quality being inconsistent. Yes there are moments when it looks very good, other moments where it looks smeary. Still and all, colors seem pretty accurate. I bought the film for the surround track. Not only for the explosions, but mostly for the John Barry action score. Had been a while since Barry had scored an action film and I looked forward to the BD.

While the explosions certainly are powerful, it's a bit less impressive than I would have though. Yes, there seems to be missing detail inside the explosions. I felt the music score mix to be a little less than I anticipated. Seemed to be a bit further back in the mix than I expected. Still it was very clean. As for the ambient scenes, there wasn't that much in the surrounds to make for a great surround track.
