Default 'Platoon' - High-Def Digest Review

Our review of 'Platoon' has just been posted. E say Oliver's Stone's film is still powerful stuff. This Blu-ray features the best video presentation for the film ever. Audio is a bit disappointing but not a total letdown. Extras are fantastic. For fans, this is a must own.
Highly recommended!

I love this movie for all it is and I used to love the Director, but I just Can't stand him anymore. After he gave support to not other than CHAVEZ (Venezuela President), as a Venezuelan I can't respect him anymore, he goes to my country (country I had to leave because an state company negate me a Job because I was NOT a part of the Chavez political party), to say how great our socialism is but for doing that he GETS BACK WITH TONS OF MONEY plus he WILL NEVER live in my country.

So I find him a hipocritical, so you believe in socialism yet you take 10 million dollars? + You wouldnt live in a political systema you say works wonders?

One thing I am not pro Democracy or socialism or communism or kingdom, I dont the care the political system used as long as it gives people all they need happyness and well being.

What people have in Venezuela is not any of that, so for me this is not a movie I will buy, I bought the Special Edition on DVD but he is not seeing my money anymore.

I was disappointed when I first bought it last week.. Some scenes not so good.. over all it looks pretty great.. The AQ, well, I wished it would have been allot better.. Dialog dips threw out and action scene's sound tiny.. This could have been allot better.. Guess got to wait for the next release... again..

IMO, the PQ was acceptable-to-good, but no more than that. Maybe I'm getting spoiled, though, with a few very good looking imports of movies from the same period (incidentally, Hamburger Hill was one of them, which from my impressions looked quite good, if not better than Platoon, which is interesting considering it is not nearly as well-known as Oliver Stone's masterpiece) Need to watch that one again to see how it compares.

However, as others have pointed out, the audio really is quite disappointing. They took minimal efforts in bringing this into multichannel. It has no more force than VHS tape, frankly. There is some use of the rear channels, but overall it sounds sloppy and has instances of sounding like a muffled radio mix (in one scene).
There is basically no bass direction or LFE activity -whatsoever-. Dialogue is quite intelligible, I'll give them that, but not more than you'd expect.

PQ: 3.5
AQ: 2

I've never understood what anyone finds exceptional about this movie. It's solid, IMO, but, to me, pretty much the definition of average. I think Full Metal Jacket wipes it off the map and I don't even really like Full Metal Jacket that much.

Comparing Kubrick's work with anyone else's wouldn't be fair. But on a more serious note; I do agree a bit with your assessment, Platoon certainly has its flaws but it's such a personal and important piece of work which--to me--is what makes it a great film.

Platoon is a great movie, but yeah it doesn't hold a candle to Full Metal Jacket.

i see what Doc's saying. overall, i love the movie, but i do think it's slightly overrated, and can see if someone would find to be nothing special. IMO, it's an excellent film that REALLY comes together at the conclusion but i would definitely put Full Metal Jacket ahead of it (a near masterpiece for me, and i actually prefer the second half to the first!) and of course, Apocalypse Now at the #1 King Spot of Vietnam films.
