Solid State Society takes place after the events of the 2nd gig. The Laughing Man and Individual Eleven are basically the first and second gigs of the tv show, respectively, re-edited into movie form. There's more to it but that's basically the gist of it.

It's also similar to how the 11 episodes of Eden of the East were condensed into a movie called Air Communication.

I guess these are like the Evangelion 1.0 and 2.0 movies that are basically newly-animated movie versions of the TV series?

These aren't newly animated. They're just the original TV series edited into two films plus the TV film Solid State Society.

Skip The laughing Man and The Individual Eleven. They are the 24 episode seasons re-cut into movies. Then to top it all off they re-dub the English voices with completely new actors (because it is a different production company that cut the movies). GitS is one of the few anime that I feel has a great English dub and changing the actors I have grown to love just ruins it.

Solid State Society is awesome and I highly recommend it. Be sure to have watched the first 2 seasons of the show though. I am looking forward to seeing the quality of the BR.

The new Eva movies are a retelling of the story. It starts out like the show, but the second movie is very different. Plus it is going to be 4 movies total which gives a lot more room to tell the whole story than trying to cram everything into 2hrs like the GitS movies.

I'll pick up SSS for sure, but I'll wait for the seasons to come out on BR instead of bothering with the two "we removed everything good" movies.
