Default 'Leaving Las Vegas' - High-Def Digest Review

Nate says 'Leaving Las Vegas' is no 'Honeymoon In Vegas,' and that's a good thing. This is not easy cinema, but it's very good stuff. This Blu-ray however is NOT good stuff. It's a dump title. Video and audio are just horrible on this Best Buy exclusive. Good movie, bad, bad disc.

I like this flick. Good thing I got it at BB and paid only $9.99.

I remember liking this movie the first time I saw it, however I will not be watching it again. Some movies are too much. This one made me super depressed, don't want to repeat the experience.

I feel tricked into getting this disc becaues I have a feeling Sony will revisit it but I haven't finished the movie yet but I do agree audio isn't that awful though but it's hard to hear dialogue at times.

It should have come with a bottle of champagne...and swim trunks.

Oh well, there's always the Special Edition.

In the world of horribly depressing films, this is a champion. Some very strong performances here, so it shouldn't have been treated so badly when it came time for the Blu Ray transfer. Add this to the equally horrid transfer (from Australia)? and it snowballs that bad feeling. This film was nominated for an Oscar--it deserves better than this. MGM better not drop the ball like this when it comes time to bring "Midnight Cowboy" to !

The quality of this release seems to be inline with other releases of LLV on Blu. Namely the France and Germany releases. It's my understanding that this was shot in Super 16 and not 35mm so that definitely attributes to the lack of detail and overall hazy feeling of this film. Plus a lot of it was shot at night or in very dimly lit rooms. As for the excessive EE or DNR that's just too bad. This is a great film and I'm not fretting adding it to my collection since I don't own the DVD of it. But if I did I doubt I'd be upgrading.(Note: I haven't watched the Blu-ray yet but it's in my queue for this weekend.)

I am so very disappointed to see this review. This is an excellent, although disturbing, film. When it came out on blu-ray, I grabbed it at BestBuy for $10, thinking "what a bargain". Now we find out the movie studios are determined to stunt the growth of HD popularity by putting out cheap, shoddy products. But they WILL spend their resources chasing crap like new copy protection schemes requiring corrupted audio tracks and unannounced firmware code implants (cinavia). I cannot understand their priorities sometimes.
I guess I will probably open this title, since I bought it to replace my laser disc of this movie. If I determine the laser disc looks as good as the blu-ray, I'm going to scream. And tell everyone who will listen not to waste their money on this blu-ray release, of course.

Update:
I perused another forum with some user feedback on this release. Although their comments weren't overly complimentary regarding pq and aq, their comments also were not as crtical of the quality as our reviewer's comments were. So maybe there is some hope that I won't block my eyes and gag when I play this title . . . .

Looks like my French Import HD DVD is a better version then this recent BLU RAY release. The French Import HD DVD got 3 stars while this new BLU RAY version got 1 and a half stars for PQ.

Keep in mind that these two articles were written by different people years apart.
